Hi. My name is Jack Lawrence.
The basics:
I’m 29.
I live and work in London.
My day job is working in technical sales at a quantum-computing start-up
Why you are probably here is that my hobby is making videos which generally involve themes of philosophy and/or physics.
Extremely condensed backstory:
I studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge for undergrad (specialising mostly in Physics, with some History and Philosophy of Science studies) and graduated in 2016.
Afterwards, I worked in London for a year in consultancy. This was something of a crash course in nihilism in its own way. My mental health also started going very downhill for a variety of other reasons.
Partially realising this I decided to run back screaming into the arms of academia and more debt.
A such I completed a masters in the Philosophy of Physics at Oxford from 2017 to 2018.
I wrote about the metaphysics of time, the one-way speed of light, explanations in science and the H-Theorem.
I was offered a place to do a PhD at Oxford with the Philosophy of Physics department, but was unable to accept due to issues concerning a variety of aspects of my life, including as-mentioned- mental health and financial worries.
My academic ambitions dashed, I sort of disenchantedly got a job and got on with it. I found my feet a bit in tech (I have a LinkedIn if you really want to look me up) and spent most of my spare time doing improv comedy and occasionally writing.
Then the pandemic happened.
I couldn’t do Improv anymore, so I started making videos. I decided to try for one year - I called it A Year Of Bad Art.
In the last week of that year, I had a video go viral on Tiktok (incidentally, on the philosophy of time - video here if you're interested)
Since then, I kept at it as best I can in my spare time.
Plans for the future:
I’ll be doing more writing this year. Hoping to launch an email list, and maybe even publish a short ebook.
